UK creates three times as many unicorns than the US for every dollar in seed and early-stage VC investment
IMS Digital Ventures' International VC Investment Index finds the UK produced 3.08 unicorns per $1bn of early-stage VC (2014–24) — nearly 3× the US.
IMS Digital Ventures’ flagship original research — the International VC Investment Index — ranks European and North American economies by seed/early-stage VC investment (2014–24) and unicorns created since 2014, using OECD and CB Insights data.
The headline
The UK has created almost three times as many billion-dollar companies as the US for every dollar of seed and early-stage VC investment over the last decade. Between 2014 and 2024, UK start-ups outperformed the US, Canada and Germany at converting early-stage investment into billion-dollar valuations — 57 unicorns from $18.5bn invested.
The numbers
- UK — 57 unicorns from $18.5bn → a ratio of 3.08 unicorns per $1bn, the second-highest of any major economy receiving ≥$5bn.
- US — 764 unicorns since 2014, but $625bn invested → a ratio of just 1.22.
- Germany — 32 unicorns from $14bn → 2.3.
- Netherlands — 10 firms from $5.1bn.
Finance and insurance at the heart of UK innovation
Roughly 47% of UK unicorns (27 of 57) are in fintech or insurance — Monzo, Marshmallow, Wise, Revolut. A further six sit in cloud, cybersecurity and AI, including Darktrace and Global Switch.
UK seed and early-stage investment grew fivefold over the decade: seed VC rose from $50m (2014) to $538m (2024); seed-plus-early-stage VC from $576m to $3bn.
